Fashion Week 2009 in New York A Monster Success
This past week saw the 2009 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week
go off without a hitch in New York. The event ran from
Thursday, September 17 thru Thursday, September 24, 2009.
The annual extravaganza was capped off when Narciso Rodriguez
was named the Spring 2010 "Mercedes-Benz Presents"
Designer. |
Opening Day of the gala affair showed off the styles
of such designers as Michael Angel, Duckie Brown, and
Rosa Cha. The following days saw new lines by stalwarts
such as Nicole Miller, Christian Siriano, Rebecca Taylor,
Custo Barcelona, Anna Sui, and Tommy Hilfiger.
On Friday, legendary designer Ralph Lauren had his moment
in the spotlight. The designer proved once again why the
respect will always trump the teasing. This was Lauren
at his absolute best - which is to say, fabulous. Lauren's
models exited via a grand archway, strolling beneath the
glow of three massive crystal chandeliers. Preshow, he
had cited a mood of romantic luxury. His show seemed like
something more than a lineup of breathtaking clothes.
Consciously or otherwise, it delivered to the American
industry a dazzling visual pep talk from its most powerful
designer, someone who has been through booms, busts and
Wall Street woes before and has always come out more than
fine on the other side. Lauren's message, loud and clear:
Do what you do, the best you can, no matter what. He knows
what he's talking about.
Francisco Costa and the Calvin Klein label were out to
impress as well. Costa chose to explore the darker side
of the same architectural school as his recent, stellar
spring collection. And certainly there's much to be said
for his determined, confident approach - these are clothes
for women of presence. Many of his pieces looked chic,
especially the trim suits and sheaths. But at some point
as the lineup progressed, what began as stylish bravura
turned ponderous; a combination of weighty, all-black
fabrics and constructions that featured their share of
tricks - flaps and folds secured with giant buttons; endless
takes on those sloping hems.
For fall, a newfound temperance reined in Vera Wang's
artistic fervor. The collection was as soothing as it
was glamorous. And perhaps as savvy too, because these
gorgeous clothes should appeal to a broad range of women.
All-in-all, the event lived up to its billing as there
were more triumphs on display than failures. Celebrity
fashion divas were out in droves. Paris Hilton, Nicky
Hilton, Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman, and Renee Zellweger
were all on-hand throughout the festivities to view the
new releases by those designers they have become associated
with. One of the designs debuted at this show is bound
to make an appearance on the red carpet imminently.
At the same time the New York event is winding down, the
other fashion capitals of the globe are just heating up.
The 'Milano Moda Donna' event in Milan, Italy runs from
23 to 30 September. Another phase of the worldwide celebration
of fashion takes place in London. These events will dictate
the direction of high-echelon fashion for the upcoming
year.
