Playing Dress-Up After the Age of Ten

One thing that has always been dominant in a very general fashion sense is that people will go to great lengths to basically adorn a full costume. By this we mean that some people will accessorize and go full tilt toward achieving a look known to a certain profession or perhaps a famous movie role. Others indulge in dressing themselves and styling
themselves as an exact replica of a celebrity they admire. It is an adult way to keep playing the "dress-up" games they practiced as a kid. Men can be just as susceptible to women in this dress-up adventure.

We've already discussed how some people enjoy the comfort and casualness of the '60s hippie attire {see: It Came Back Once Already… }. And we also covered how many young men and adult men announce their sporting allegiances by wearing every article of clothing the team has on the marketplace {see: Why The Big 5 Major Sports Love You}. Let's consider some of the others:

The Mafia Look: This one isn't as popular as when the mob was in full power and young toughs wanted to actually get into the organization. So they dressed (and acted)the part as young men. Nor as popular as when The Sopranos made a whole new generation want to emulate the flashy gangster look. But it usually involves silk shirts and suits. Dark, expensive Italian suits; very nice, dapper outfits. The hair is often combed/greased back and not very long. A fine watch is almost mandatory to go with the expensive Italian shoes. It is a look that the wearer feels is classy while others think it's a bit loud.

The Army Look
: This one is not to be confused with the serviceman look. This is the weekend warrior that likes to wear camouflage from top-to-bottom. He wears military boots even when he's going to a restaurant or a backyard BBQ. He may even wear dog tags around his neck even though he was not actually in the service. They may be custom-made tags he bought thru a magazine or had made at an army surplus shop. And when the weather gets cold, the traditional green army jacket comes out. The hair is often worn short. Real veterans who enjoy and carry on the army look are more likely to go with longer hair.

The Serviceman Look: This one is honest, genuine, and easy. These are the actual men and women who have served in the military dressed in their full regalia. We see them honored at football games with sideline invitations. We see them in their military "whites" when they need to appear in court for any reason. Or when they stand up at a wedding or are the groom themselves. This look is always sharp whether it is a serviceman or a servicewoman.

The Heavy-Metal Chick Look: Men stopped doing the heavy metal thing to a high degree when the music fell mostly out of favor and most women convinced their men that long hair---whether heavy metal or mullet----was OUT. But many of the women who loved that musical genre still like to dress in the suggestive way they always did, wear a lot of makeup, and style their hair big. They still like the long-haired look on the guys that play the heavy metal bar scene. This look usually includes lots of leather (skirts, jackets, etc.). The hair still requires a ton of hairspray. Leather boots are common foot/legwear.

The Grunge/Slacker Look: This look came out of the grunge music scene and still allowed for longer hair. In fact, you not only could wear it long, but keep it kind of stringy and unkempt. We won't go so far as to say unwashed and greasy……but you don't want to look like you comb it in the mirror at all. Feel free to shave only every three or four days as well. But the clothing is all about flannel and ripped jeans and beat-up, casual attire. The whole look is meant to shout I threw these clothes on and it's not that important to me. The flannel may have a hole in the elbows. You may just be wearing it over an old, faded t-shirt that you've had for years. You might be wearing beat-up ten year old sneakers on your feet. The more casual collection of old, worn-out stuff you can combine together without looking like a 1970s reject, or a confused clash of different-decades fashion wannabe…….the better.
